 Healthcare is often fast paced and tricky to navigate. Whilst I don't get it right sometimes I feel there is so much to be gained from at least trying within the mental health care space. 
 
What is power if not choice?

The power to ignore, avoid, or fail to learn about issues that don't directly impact us can perpetuate inequality. Inclusivity, diversity, and equity are undermined when power dynamics are unexamined. It's important to keep in mind just like, 'with power comes great responsibility' so does choice. (a deeper dive for a different day).

Key societal dynamics at play:

Race, age, gender, sexuality, socio-economic status, education, and ability.
For those lacking privilege in these areas, there is often inherent trauma tied to societal power imbalances. In healthcare, failing to address these dynamics risks perpetuating harm or retraumatization.

Self-reflection for practitioners:

🟢 What does culturally specific, patient-centered care look like for this individual?
🟢 How can you focus on collaboration rather than an expert/patient hierarchy?
🟢 How can you acknowledge your privilege and recognize the patient’s unique lived experience?
🟢 How can you stay open and curious about what your patient values and prioritizes?
🟢 What steps can you take to create a safe, inclusive space?
🟢 How do you navigate the discomfort of knowing you might not "get it right" every time?

By asking these questions, we can move toward more equitable and compassionate care.
